The Assistive Technology Internet Module featuring the AT Assessment Process in the
School Environment explains that the process must include the following components:
- Identification of the AT assessment team
- Gathering information (student, environment, task, tools)
- Matching features of the AT to student needs
- Making recommendations to the IEP team
- Acquiring and implementing AT
- Monitoring student progress
The module provides specific information about the SETT framework for determining AT
needs and a "feature match" process for honing in on the best technology solutions for
students. Additionally, the module describes the "TechMatrix" website that provides a
customized search based on the student's specific needs. An effective AT assessment will
support the IDEA goals of providing all students with equal opportunities, full participation,
economic self-sufficiency, and independent living.
For me, this module clarified the importance of a carefully considered assessment of AT
needs in the K-12 setting. Relating to my work with Cabrini's students, the module
provided information regarding the importance of considering changes in the student's AT
needs as they transition to a post-high school setting. The AT assessment team must
determine how the student's needs will be supported in the new environment and make
sure that the student will have the necessary AT support to be successful outside of the K-
12 setting.
