AT Consideration in the IEP Process

The AT Internet Module discussing "AT Consideration in the IEP Process" explains that

the 1997 IDEA revision which requires all IEP teams to consider whether assistive

technology is needed, compelled consideration of  AT needs for all students receiving

special education services.  In 2004, the reauthorized Individuals with Disabilities Education

Improvement Act (IDEIA) stated that AT must be considered to determine if the student is

receiving a free, appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.

AT Consideration vs. AT Assessment?

The term "AT Consideration" differs from the term "AT Assessment" which I discussed in

my last post.  AT Consideration is a brief process in which the IEP team clearly identifies

the student's needs and required educational tasks to determine if the student might require

AT to participate and progress in the general curriculum.

AT Consideration Questions to Address:

"What is it that we expect the student to be able to do in the educational program that

he/she is currently unable to do because of his/her disability?"

"Would AT provide a solution for that?"

AT Consideration at Cabrini University Disability Resource Center:

Although IEP's are not in effect at the college level, from my newly gained

understanding of AT Consideration, it occurs to me that some version of an AT checklist

would be helpful in addressing the needs of our DRC students.  The link below for the

"OCALI AT Consideration Checklist" could be modified for use as a quick resource to

provide focus in selecting AT tools that would help our students perform to their capabilities

at Cabrini University.
