Computers and the Internet to Teach Math
In my next series of blog postings I will discuss how the computer and internet can be used to teach math. Specific computer technologies have been demonstrated to facilitate the math learning process by increasing engagement, participation, and independence for students with learning disabilities (Dell, Newton, & Petroff, 2012). As I have discussed throughout my blog, careful consideration must be given prior to selecting an appropriate AT device. Accordingly, the decision to use computers and the internet to teach math must involve a decision making process that includes of the purpose of the computer, educational application, student needs, and ease of use. Thoughtfully selected AT for math instruction will build on the principles of Universal Design by providing a variety of means for engagement, representation, and expression allowing the students greater opportunities for understanding and success.
