How will the Communication Board Meet this Annual Goal?
While Andy uses a variety of signs, gestures, and symbols to communicate with his family at home, at school he only signs with prompts and only makes a few gestures to communicate.
To increase his ability to communicate at school, Andy needs to use a variety of techniques and resources including a low-tech communication board as shown above. When selecting or designing an appropriate communication board for Andy, educators must consider how and where the board will be used. Additionally, consideration must be given to how frequently the board will be used and how it will be organized. Andy's cognitive and literacy skills must be considered when determining which symbols and words are used on the board. Offering Andy a thoughtfully prepared communication board in the classroom will contribute towards meeting this annual goal and will allow him greater "voice" and personal agency in school. In addition to the academic benefits of the communication board, Andy will benefit socially as the communication board will provide him an alternate way to communicate successfully with his peers.
