IEP Annual Goal Met by Portable Word Processor

As discussed in prior blog postings, IDEA 2004 requires that AT be considered during the IEP process.  In this post and in my next four posts, I will discuss examples of specific IEP annual goals and suggest an AT device that would meet the stated goal.

Annual Goal:  Eric will use a computer or portable word processor to complete 100% of his assignments in 10th Grade English and Civics classes. (Example 2)

How would a Portable Word Processor meet this Annual Goal?

Eric is easily fatigued when writing assignments for English and Civics because his hand strength is limited and the assignments in these classes are lengthy.  A Portable Word Processor, such as the Neo 2 by Renaissance Learning which I discussed in a post on October 15th, would be highly beneficial for Eric.  The Neo 2 is relatively inexpensive and has a full size keyboard and basic editing features. Eric could use this device in class to complete his lengthy writing assignments and also to take notes on class lectures. The Neo 2 is portable and sturdy and can be connected to a computer to download files for additional use.  Since the Neo 2 would not need to be connected to a computer for Eric to use it in class, Eric's teachers could be assured that he is not benefiting from internet access.
